Hurricane Sandy

Tens of thousands of people were ordered to evacuate coastal areas Sunday as big cities and small towns across the U.S. Northeast braced for the onslaught of a superstorm threatening some 60 million people along the most heavily populated corridor in the nation.
As a monstrous Hurricane Sandy made its way up the Atlantic Coast, New York City announced its subways, buses and trains would stop running Sunday night, and its 1.1 million-student school system would be closed on Monday. Mayor Michael Bloomberg also ordered the evacuation of part of lower Manhattan and other low-lying neighborhoods.
"If you don't evacuate, you are not only endangering your life, you are also endangering the lives of the first responders who are going in to rescue you," Bloomberg said. "This is a serious and dangerous storm."
Tens of thousands of people along the coast in Delaware, New Jersey, Connecticut and other threatened areas were also under orders to clear out because of the danger of heavy rain, punishing winds and a potentially deadly tidal surge.
Sandy was headed north from the Caribbean, where it left at least 65 people dead, mostly in Haiti, and was expected to hook left toward the mid-Atlantic coast and come ashore late Monday or early Tuesday, most likely along the New Jersey shore, colliding with a wintry storm moving in from the west and cold air streaming down from the Arctic.
Forecasters warned that the resulting megastorm could wreak havoc over 800 miles ~

God and His people ~

The Hebrew words Elohim and Adonai are applied to something other than the true and living God. There is, however, one name that is unique to the God of the Bible. This name is Yahweh—an alternative transliteration is Jehovah. Yahweh refers to "the self-existent, eternal God" the name God revealed to Moses:

And God said to Moses, I AM WHO I AM. And He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, I AM has sent me to you' (Exodus 3:14).

Moses later wrote.The Lord is a warrior; the Lord is his name (Exodus 15:3).
The prophet Isaiah declared.

I am the LORD; that is my name! I will not give my glory to another or my praise to idols (Isaiah 42:8).

Jeremiah wrote. Therefore I will teach them - this time I will teach them my power and might. Then they will know that my name is the LORD (Jeremiah 16:21).

Jeremiah also wrote.

This is what the LORD says, he who made the earth, the LORD who formed it and established it -the LORD is his name (Jeremiah 33:2).

The prophet Amos wrote.

He who made the Pleiades and Orion, who turns blackness into dawn and darkens day into night, who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out over the face of the land - the LORD is his name (Amos 5:8).

In Amos it also says.

The One who builds his upper chambers in the heavens and has founded his vaulted dome over the earth, he who calls for the waters of the sea and pours them out on the face of the earth, the Lord is his name (Amos 9:6).

Therefore the name Yahweh or Jehovah (Lord) is the name that God uses of Himself.

All Capital Letters In English Translations

In English translations of the Old Testament, whenever we find the word Lord spelled LORD with all capital letters, it is the translation of the name Yahweh.

The Vowel Points Were Taken From Adon

The name Jehovah or Yahweh is taken from the consonants of the divine name and the vowels for the Hebrew word for master "Adon." The four letters that spell the divine name (YHWH or JHVH) are called the Tetragrammaton.

Yahweh Is The Sacred Name

The name Yahweh is sacred. The Jews considered as unpronounceable and incommunicable.

Yahweh Is The Covenant Keeping Name

Yahweh is the covenant-keeping name of God. When the creative aspect of God is recorded then the name Elohim is used (Genesis 1). However when there is a relationship involved with humanity the name Yahweh is used (Genesis 2). These differences are consistent throughout the entire Old Testament.

Yahweh Is Used With Other Names For God

Yahweh is used in combination with other names for God.

Yahweh-Elohim

This is translated "the Lord God." This title is used of God relationship to humanity as the Creator, and Redeemer.

This is the account of the heavens and the earth when they were created. When the LORD God made the earth and the heavens (Genesis 2:4).

Later, in the same chapter, we read.

So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place (Genesis 2:21).

When Adam and Eve sinned, Yahweh-Elohim made them garments of skin.

The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife, and clothed them (Genesis 3:21).

This name is also used of God's relationship to Israel.

The Lord, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my birth, and who spoke to me and who swore to me, saying, ‘To your descendants I will give this land,' He will send His angel before you, and you will take a wife for my son from there (Genesis 24:7).

Moses also wrote.

God, furthermore, said to Moses, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, `The Lord, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you. This is My name forever, and this is My memorial-name to all generations" (Exodus 3:15).

Adonai Yahweh

The combination of Adonai Yahweh is used. Moses said.

O Lord God, you have begun to show your servant your greatness and your strong hand; for what god is there in heaven or on earth who can do such works and mighty acts as yours? (Deuteronomy 3:24).

Joshua wrote.

Joshua said, "Alas, O Lord God, why did you ever bring this people over the Jordan, only to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us? If only we had been willing to dwell beyond the Jordan" (Joshua 7:7).

Yahweh Sabaoth - The Lord Of Hosts

He is also known as the Lord of Hosts.

Now this man would go up from his city yearly to worship and to sacrifice to the Lord of hosts in Shiloh (1 Samuel 1:3).

This combination occurs at times with reference to warfare. It occurs mostly when the nation Israel is in some type of crisis. For example we read.

The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our stronghold (Psalm 46:7).

It also speaks of God' power and glory.

Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory (Psalm 24:10).

The primary idea behind, "hosts" is the angels but the name also refers to the divine power that is available to meet the need of the Lord's people.

The Word Yahweh Implies A Relationship

He is Yahweh only to those who have a relationship with Him. The name Yahweh is used throughout the Old Testament with compound words that describe something of His character.

He Is The Lord Who Provides

Yahweh is the providing God.

And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide (Genesis 22:14).

He Is The Lord Who Heals

He is the Lord who heals.

He said, "If you listen carefully to the voice of the LORD your God and do what is right in his eyes, if you pay attention to his commands and keep all his decrees, I will not bring on you any of the diseases I brought on the Egyptians, for I am the LORD, who heals you (Exodus 15:26)

He Is Our Banner

He is called the Lord our banner.

And Moses built an altar and called it, The LORD is my banner (Exodus 17:15)

Yahweh Is Our Peace

The Lord is also our peace.

Then Gideon built an altar there to the LORD, and called it, The LORD is peace. To this day it still stands at Ophrah, which belongs to the Abiezrites (Judges 6:24).

He Is A Shepherd

The Lord is the Shepherd to believers.

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want (Psalm 23:1).

Yahweh Is The Lord Our Righteousness

He is also the Lord our righteousness.

Now this is his name by which he will be called: THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS (Jeremiah 23:6).

He Is The Lord Who Is There

When His kingdom comes to this earth, He is the Lord who is there.

The circumference of the city shall be eighteen thousand cubits. And the name of the city from that time on shall be, The LORD is There (Ezekiel 48:35).

Each of these names of the Lord shows how He meets the needs of humanity.

The Divine Qualities Are Stressed With His Name

There are also a number of the divine qualities or attributes of the Lord that is stressed. These include the following.

The Lord Is Mighty

The Lord is mighty.

The Lord shall go forth like a mighty man; he shall stir up his zeal like a man of war. He shall cry out, yes, shout aloud; he shall prevail against his enemies (Isaiah 42:13).

The Lord Is Our Maker

He is the Lord our Maker.

Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the Lord our Maker (Psalm 95:6)

The Lord Most High

He is the Lord Most High.

I will praise the Lord according to His righteousness, and will sing praise to the name of the Lord Most High (Psalm 7:17

The Lord Is The Judge
Scripture says that the Lord is the Judge.

Therefore I have not sinned against you, but you wronged me by fighting against me. May the Lord, the Judge, render judgment this day between the children of Israel and the people of Ammon (Judges 11:27).

Summary

In the Old Testament the divine name is the Lord. The Hebrew word is pronounced Yahweh or Jehovah. This is the special name that God with to His people. In the English Bible it is spelled with all capital letters LORD. The name is also used in compound form with other divine names. This includes Yahweh-Elohim, Yahweh-Adonai, and Yahweh Sabaoth. The compound forms of the divine name emphasize the various ways in which the Lord relates to humanity. The name Yahweh is the covenant name between God and His people.

God Of Heaven ~

Adonai
Adon, in Hebrew, means “lord.” The form Adonai, used 439 times in the Bible, can be rendered either as “my Lord” or simply as “Lord.” (Linguists offer various explanations for the element -ai. Is it a possessive pronoun denoting “my” or does it indicate a plural of majesty?) Thus, we find Exodus 15:17 translated most frequently as “the sanctuary, O Lord [Adonai],* which thy hands have established” (KJV) but, sometimes, as “the sanctuary, my Lord, which your hands have established.”1 Since Adonai and Yahweh are both typically translated as “Lord,” many modern Bibles—following a suggestion first made by William Tyndale in 1530—render Yahweh as “LORD” in small capital letters, and Adonai as “Lord.” So, “The Lord [Yahweh] appeared to him” (Genesis 18:1), but “Let me take it upon myself to speak to the Lord [Adonai], I who am but dust and ashes” (Genesis 18:27). The NRSV only confuses things, however, by rendering Adonai as both “Lord” and “LORD.”

Adonai Yahweh
When used individually, both terms are translated as “Lord,” but to avoid the awkward appellation “Lord Lord,” the KJV and NRSV render the expression as “Lord God.” (Here too, small capital letters are used to indicate that the base word is Yahweh.) “Lord Yahweh” is also used. The combination Adonai Yahweh appears 310 times in the Bible, mostly in the prophetic literature, where the prophets often begin their speeches by saying, “Thus says Adonai Yahweh.”

The Almighty
The Greek Old Testament and the New Testament (Revelations 1:8) occasionally use Pantokratôr, “the Almighty,” as a divine name or epithet. Modern English translations also use “the Almighty” for the Hebrew Shaddai (see El Shaddai below); in doing so they follow the Greek Bible.

The Ancient of Days
The Ancient One
This is how the KJV and NRSV render the Aramaic divine name ‘attiyq yowm, which is only found once in the Bible, in the Book of Daniel: “I beheld till the thrones were cast down, and the Ancient of days [‘attiyq yowm] did sit, whose garment was white as snow, and the hair of his head like the pure wool: his throne was like the fiery flame, and his wheels as burning fire” (Daniel 7:9, KJV). The deity thus designated is presumably El Elyon (see below).

Ehyeh
This obscure name occurs only twice in the Bible, in Exodus 3:14 and Hosea 1:9. The Book of Exodus includes the following dialogue between Moses and the God of Israel: “But Moses said to God [Elohim], ‘If I come to the Israelites and say to them, The God [Elohim] of your ancestors has sent me to you, and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?’ God [Elohim] said to Moses, ‘I AM [Ehyeh] WHO I AM.’ He said further: ‘Thus you shall say to the Israelites: I AM [Ehyeh] has sent me to you’” (Exodus 3:13-14, NRSV). Here Elohim serves as a description of the divinity—he is the God; Ehyeh is the God’s name. Commentators are still coming up with explanations for the meaning of this obscure name, which appears to be derived from the Hebrew verb hayah, “to be.” The NRSV offers “I am what I am” and “I will be what I will be.”

El
Although not as common as Elohim (see below), this is another standard Hebrew term for “god” used for any god (with a small g) as well as for Israel’s monotheistic “God,” with a capital G—as in, “I am God [El] and there is no other” (Isaiah 45:22). The Canaanite high god was also called El, and the Hebrews may have given this deity’s name to their own god.

El Elohê Yisra’el
The name means “El the God of Israel,” but the KJV and NRSV leave it untranslated. In the Bible it is used only as the name given to a sanctuary: “And he erected there an altar, and called it El-elohe-Israel” (Genesis 33:20, KJV). (See also Elohê Yisra’el and El.)

El Elyon; Elyon
The Hebrew term elyon means “upper”; El Elyon, “The most high God” (KJV) or “God Most High” (NRSV), is found only in Genesis 14—“and he [Melchizedek of Salem] was the priest of the most high God [El Elyon]” (Genesis 14:18-22, KJV). The short form Elyon, translated “Most High,” appears more frequently. Both names were originally associated with the Canaanite high god El. But the names clearly came to be used for Yahweh, as is apparent in Psalm 7:17: “[I] will sing praise to the name of the LORD [Yahweh], the Most High [Elyon]” (Psalm 7:17, NRSV).

El Shaddai
Shaddai
The rare name El Shaddai, literally “God of the [uncultivated] fields,” but often translated as “God Almighty,” is found in Genesis 17:1, in which Yahweh appears to the 99-year-old Abram and says, “I am El Shaddai.” (God then changes Abram’s and Sarai’s names to Abraham and Sarah and promises the elderly couple a son of their own.) Far more common is the abbreviated form Shaddai, which is traditionally rendered “the Almighty,” although many contemporary Bible interpreters (but not the NRSV) leave the name Shaddai untranslated. Shaddai is frequently used in the Book of Job—for instance: “Shall a faultfinder contend with the Almighty [Shaddai]?” (Job 40:2, NRSV).

Eloah
Rare outside of the Book of Job, this word means God—as in, “Let that day be darkness; let not God [Eloah] regard it from above, neither let the light shine upon it” (Job 3:4 KJV). Linguistically, it represents the singular of Elohim (see below).

Elohê Yisra’el
This expression, meaning “the God of Israel,” is occasionally used to define Yahweh (see below)—as in Isaiah: “And I will give thee the treasures of darkness, and hidden riches of secret places, that thou mayest know that I, the Lord [Yahweh], which call thee by thy name, am the God of Israel (Elohê Yisra’el)” (Isaiah 45:3, KJV).

Elohim
Used about 2,600 times, this is a stock term in the Bible’s religious vocabulary, with three distinct meanings. First, as a plural term (-im is the standard Hebrew plural ending) it means “gods, deities,” as in, “You shall have no other gods [Elohim] before me” (Deuteronomy 5:7). Second, when used about a particular god, it can mean “the deity, a god, the god,” in the singular, as in, “You cannot worship Yahweh, for he is a holy god [Elohim]” (Joshua 24:19). Third, with a capital E, it serves as a personal name for God: “In the beginning, God [Elohim] created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1).

Elyon

The Eternal
This rendering of Yahweh has been used in both Christian and Jewish translations. It was introduced by the reformer John Calvin (1509-1564) and was subsequently used in the French Bible of Geneva (1588), by the author Matthew Arnold (1822-1888), and in the English Bible of James Moffatt (1870-1944). The first Jewish author to use it was the German philosopher and Bible translator Moses Mendelssohn (1729-1786). Later it found its way into Jewish vernacular Bibles in French (1899) and German (the translation made under the direction of the Jewish scholar Leopold Zunz [1794-1886]).

 

Yahweh ~

Yahweh is used wherever the Bible stresses God's personal relationship with his people and the ethical aspect of his nature. Elohim, on the other hand, refers to God as the Creator of the whole universe of people and things, and especially of the material world: he was the ruler of nature, the source of all life. This variation of divine names can be seen most dramatically in texts like Psalm 19. In this psalm Elohim is used in the first part, which describes God's work in creation and his relationship to the material world. But in the middle of the psalm the psalmist switches to the topic of the law of the LORD and the relationship the LORD has with those who know him; there the name Yahweh appears. A further complication occurs because Exodus 6:3 notes that God says, "I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as God Almighty, but by my name the LORD I did not make myself known to them." The resolution to this apparent contradiction to some 150 uses of the name Yahweh during the patriarchal period is to be found in a technical point of Hebrew grammar, known as beth essentiae, in the phrase "by my name." This phrase meant that while Abraham, Isaac and Jacob heard and used the name Yahweh, it was only in Moses' day that the realization of the character, nature and essence of what that name meant became clear. "By the name" is better translated "in the character [or nature] of Yahweh [was I not known]." Thus the name Yahwoh is used when the Bible wishes to present the personal character of God and his direct relationship with those human beings who have a special association with him. Contrariwise, Elohim occurs when the Scriptures are referring to God as a transcendent Being who is the author of the material world, yet One who stands above it. Elohim conveys the more philosophically oriented concept that connects deity with the existence of the world and humanity. But for those who seek the more direct, personal and ethically oriented view of God, the term Yahweh was more appropriate.

Daddy's Girl ~

She often has a special hug, the sweetest baby kiss,
And when just she and I are there I rate this treasured bliss.
But when her dad arrives at night, you'll find her in a whirl,
She hasn't time for Mother then, because she's Daddy's girl.
It's joy to see her laughing eyes, her happy baby smile,

So lovingly he'll pinch her nose or try to steal a curl
Just anything he does is right because she's Daddy's girl.
I often marvel at the charms that only dads possess,
Although I know within my heart she doesn't love me less.
We tuck her into bed at night, our one and only pearl
And 'cause I love her daddy too, I'm proud she's Daddy's girl. Amazing to watch our son become a new Daddy !

Grateful this year !

Rather than celebrate only on Thanksgiving, I thought I would be a little more grateful this year and give thanks for something different every day leading up to the holiday. Because really, despite all my worrying, I have SO MANY THINGS to be thankful for. I'm soooo Thankful for our new granddaughter ( ..she is 5 months ) and spending fall with my husband 's family , Jordon , Marlie , Aliyah Grace Summer and my Mom !
